The Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) was founded in 1987 as a French non-profit organization by President Franck Goddio. Its aim is the location, exploration, excavation and restoration of sunken sites. IEASM calls upon scientists and specialists of different scientific field to support its research missions, study and publish the findings. Furthermore it sets up exhibitions allowing the general public to get access to its discoveries.

Franck Goddio created the Far Eastern Foundation for Nautical Archaeology in the Philippines in order to conduct archaeological excavations of vessels of historical importance in Asia. Together Franck Goddio and the National Museum of the Philippines have established a research project aimed at studying the history of the archipelago through trade, from the 8th to the 18th century. FEFNA excavations are conducted in cooperation with the National Museum of the Philippines, integrating archaelogists and historians from the Museum in to the team. Excavated objects are conserved and restored at the Museum’s conservation laboratory. The Foundation works to bring out scientific publications and ensure that its discoveries are displayed in exhibitions and museums.

OCMA was established in 2003 at Oxford University in co-operation with the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) directed by Franck Goddio, and the Hilti Foundation, which has supported Franck Goddio’s archaeological expeditions for since 1995. Besides the scholarly publication of IEASM’s fieldwork in Egypt, for which the series on maritime archaeology was launched in 2007, OCMA has been engaged in providing specialist knowledge for studies on IEASM’s excavated material as well as participating in the excavations. Leading Oxford academics working with their doctoral students have been studying the larger classes of material. In addition OCMA has organized several academic conferences on different maritime topics. They aim at bringing together international scholars from different scientific fields in order to understand more about maritime trade, economies, and the people who undertook sea-going adventures around the world.
