Summary of our 1999 Alexandria Mission
In order to complete the map of the ancient Royal Quarters in Alexandria during September and October 1999 Franck Goddio and his team made an electronic survey of the west part of the harbour in Alexandria. The recently self-developed new system allows the team to make a survey even in shallow water. At the end of the mission very interesting results concerning the topography and especially concerning the ancient shipyards had been achieved.
Franck also conducted an excavation in front of Antirhodos Island. The stratography of the layers was very interesting and 6.5 metres underwater the team reached a layer containing very early Hellenistic ceramics. Michael Fitzgerald, a specialist in ancient naval architecture also resumed the study of the ancient wreck dating back to the 1st century AD found in the royal harbour of Antirhodos Island.
