Egypt’s Sunken Treasures

The exhibition “Egypt’s Sunken Treasures” presented objects exclusively from the underwater excavations of the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM), conducted since 1992 in Alexandria and Aboukir Bay by Franck Goddio in co-operation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt. Around 500 artefacts were on view, most of them never before shown in public.

Among the impressive finds were 5 metres high statues of a king and queen, as well as statues of sphinxes, offerings and liturgical objects, stelas, jewellery and coins, ceramics and items from everyday life of ancient Egypt.

“The finds represent an archaeological feat that ranks with the discovery of Pompeii”, said Gereon Sievernich, director of the Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, at the world premiere of the exhibition in 2006.

The exhibition was on display in six cities in Europe and Japan and attracted almost 3 Million visitors.
