Just 100 meters from the remains of the 'Orient' are the shaft and ring of the 'Tonnant's' main anchor, one of seven found in the immediate area. As the 'Orient' threatened to turn into a fireball, the captains of the other French ships ordered their anchors to be cut so that they could flee. This helped some ships escape altogether, while causing others to run aground in the shallow bay.
