Ehab-Mahmoud Fahmy
1 September 1969, Egypt
Has worked with Franck Goddio since 1997.
Ehab studied at the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, where he received his degree in Egyptology. He has worked for the Supreme Council for Antiquities as an Inspector of archaeology on numerous land archaeology sites (such as the Bibliotheque Alexandrina, Marina, etc.). He joined the Department of Underwater Archaeology at its inception in 1997.
He really enjoyed the project of the excavation of Napoleon’s fleet, which was sunk in the Bay of Abou Kir in 1798. In 1998, Ehab found 67 gold coins in ONE dive, from 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning!! He was diving with Alain and Franck and there was nearly zero visibility… they were lucky... they found the first coin… and then began to look harder… there were so many! He also loved working in the Red Sea on INA’s shipwreck project… the water there is so clear --- the opposite of our projects in Alexandria and Abou Kir, where visibility is almost always very poor.
“You can’t do this work unless you really love to do it. It is very hard work, so it must be a strong passion to make you do it for months and years! It’s hard physically and mentally… and you don’t earn good wages! I like underwater archaeology because it’s different… always something new to do. I’m also very pleased to be part of Egypt’s first Department of Underwater Archaeology, Supreme Council of Antiquities.”
