Royal Captain

Join Franck Goddio and his team in the recovery of the East India Company ship 'The Royal Captain' in the Philippines. In 1773 on its way from Canton to Balambangan the ship hit a reef and was lost. Extremely advanced High Tech equipment was needed to carry out this deep water archaeological excavation. After ten years of intensive search for the ship, finally a trail of cargo led Franck Goddio’s team down the reef to the ship’s bell – in 240 metres depths.

What happened

On the last leg of its journey, the East India Company ship „Royal Captain“ tragically sunk in the Chinese Sea. The site was indeed an extremely dangerous one: the lagoon and coral reef was in fact part of an underwater mountain reaching more than 2000 meters in depth.

When in time

On the 17 December 1773, after a night and day-long struggle to free the Royal Captain from the rocks of the shoal, the captain gave the order to abandon the ship.

Where did it happen

In the South China Sea, approx. 70 miles to the west of the island Palawan, the Royal Captain struck a reef during a fine clear night.
